FRIDAY - Thought this might be fun to know: pedestrians have no right of way in Moscow. Enter the street at your own peril and expect no courtesies. Our friends confirm that if you walk with determination and purpose, you'll be less likely to be hit by any traffic. Making eye contact with drivers here is actually a bad thing; opposite of the US, if a driver sees that you see him, his thought is, "Ah, he sees me, I'll proceed like a bat out of hell."
It's weird, but I'm starting to get used to crossing the street without looking for the drivers eyes as I would in the US.
The sidewalks are often dark grey after a snow and turn blacker as it melts. The pollution from the traffic settles on the snow and the streets as people grind it in and this tends to make it a bit slippery. Oh, and no salt on the sidewalks. Ice is a way of life, even for Russian women who walk about in remarkably high spike-heeled boots.
Two crazy kids from the midwest travel to Russia in the dark of winter, with a dream... to stand in Red Square in January...
